Month: June 2008

  • I’m back

Well I haven’t got much to talk about.  I am, once again, exhausted, mostly from one night poorly planned so I didn’t sleep enough.  Ah well.

Lots of big things going on in life, and, per usual, will be posting lots of pictures to distract both you and myself!  Here we go:

    Friday, June 20, lunch:

Exactly the reason I avoided street meat for so long.  Yes, I had a tummy ache later.

Still Friday… picked up a sweet treat for BF and me.

My Red Velvet on the left, his Coffee (or was it cappucino? or mocha?) on the left.  Ironically, we both liked the other’s cupcake more.

June 21: Saturday brunch/breakfast.  Courtesy of myself… made for the BF, I rarely eat French toast.  And yes that’s a little sprig of basil from my own plant

June 22, Sunday, brunch after volunteering at the soup ktchen.  Look at all the dipping sauces/spreads!

Monday, June 23 lunch: yes, even at home, I like to plate my food.  And I actually used my plate from Color Me Mine to eat – I usually use it as the um-what-do-you-call-it thing you leave on your stove to rest drippy spoons.  A spoon rest, I guess.

Basically what I took care of on Monday: cleaning, arranging, organizing my kitchen.  It’s tiny!  Not as small as the last one, but squishier nonetheless.  See the little one who HAD to jump into the picture?!  Brat.  (So yes, I have an eat-in-kitchen but I haven’t really eaten in there aside from standing at the sink perhaps.  And I really do need a 2nd coat of paint but I’m all moved in and stuff so I kind of feel whatever about doing that.)

Tuesday, June 24 lunch: yes, I ate the whole tray for lunch.  Inhaled it, really, I was so starving by the time I got back and was able to sit down to freaking eat.

Tuesday June 24th dinner… kind of bento style.  A little bit of everything.  (Roast duck, crispy skin pork, gim bap, marinated fishies, marinated cuttlefish, spicy garlic beans, pickled cucumbers, vegetarian duck, choi sum, some beef pancake thing my brother said was good, and seafood pancake, with white rice in the middle.)

My sad and lonely lunch on June 26th.. yes I skipped a day.  I don’t know what I had for lunch on Wednesday.  I know I went grocery shopping and picked up loads of stuff, then went to my sister’s house to celebrate my brother-in-law’s ancient birthday, and had dinner with his parents at their house, so I didn’t take pictures of that (but DAMN was it GOOD!)… but not sure what was lunch.  And you wonder why I take pictures of all that I eat?  Anyway, the above is basically much of what I had on Tuesday again.  And some char sui.

For those who know me, this is a true accomplishment.  I wrapped this.  I was so proud, I had to take pictures.

I wrapped it, then put the ribbon on and attached a charm.  I thought it was a cell phone charm when I ordered it, but it’s rather, well, large.  HOW PRETTY DOES THAT LOOK?  Me, the totally-not-craft-inclined!!!  Hehehe.

Of course, when it was time for the bday celebration, I left it at home and was glad I’d taken pictures, since I wound up showing the pictures to the bday girl instead.  And to everyone else.  (What’s inside isn’t even that exciting, or I doubt it will be for her.  Oh well.)

Friday afternoon @ the game.  Didn’t take pictures of the soggy nachos or the hot dog, which was good as usual, even though I literally inhaled it… but DAMN WAS THAT A GOOD GAME.  If you’re a baseball fan, or somewhat observant of all the baseball pictures I take, you’ll notice that I’m not sitting in my normal seat… nor am I in the same stadium… and plus I go to games on Sundays, not Fridays!  What gives!  Well it’s the YANKEES/METS BABY!!! and I got excellent seats (look how close we are!  Actually we even moved down an hour later so we were on the plushy seats!) for an excellent price so off we went on Friday.  Oh dan, what a GREAT game! including a GRAND SLAM BY DELGADO, afterwhich we noticed a SQUIRREL running around the field, and then a MAN RAN DOWN ONTO THE FIELD and was tackled by 5 security guys!  When all is said and done, the final score speaks for itself: 15-6, MY METS BABY!!!  (Admittedly, the night game of the two-stadium double-header was 9-0, Yankees.)

After the game, we headed back into the city to pick up some stuff: my first paycheck as a freelance food writer (squee!!!), some stuff from his office, and we were planning on hitting a bar to watch the 2nd game but honestly it was sooo gross out, we were all so sticky from sitting at the first game, well, we headed home.  Not before stopping by this place for dinner, however, and we were both pleasantly surprised with the food.  (Review to come, of course.)

Most of the photos of this day can’t be shown here, but it was the bday party!  This was our last stop for the night (3rd Floor Cafe, ahhh brings back memories!).  We started off at the batting cages – I’m STILL sore!, then bowled two games where I proved that 5 years away from the lanes will really show- boo…, then dinner at Korean BBQ place in K-town and then off to 3rd Floor Cafe.  Oh, it was a ton of fun, made even more so because we started drinking at bowling and didn’t stop until we went home.  Wow.  Haven’t drank that much in a while.  I also effectively proved, once again, that I AM AWESOME… but did you ever doubt?

It was a baseball-heavy weekend as I headed back to Shea Stadium for the last [regular season] Subway Series game ever to be played at Shea (and yes, Friday was the same for Yankee Stadium).  The only way another Subway Series game would be played is if they both go to the World Series but that’s looking highly unlikely, so.  Anyway, we rocked the house again – way to go OLLIE! – and won 3-1.  Awesome game.  I was happy… very happy.

Afterwards, I headed to my sister’s house for a BBQ where I ate so much that I seriously was ready to blow chunks right after I finished eating.  Good stuff.  Should have taken home some stuff for lunch today, but whatever!

And today’s bento.  There was supposed to be meat in there but I opened up my turkey slices and they’d gone slimy and bad.  So… no meat.  Haha.

Anyway, it’s almost time for lunch and I’m starving.  Will probably have to get something to eat in addition to this, but ah well.

    Happy Monday!!!

  • Aggravation

When your forms of relaxation are aggravating you, perhaps it’s time to find a new method of relaxation…?

    In any case.

    Got a package yesterday… squee!!!

Can’t tell you what’s in it… Let’s just say, I spent a lot… and hopefully these things work!

    Today’s bento

Have a fantastic weekend everyone!  I will probably not be around next week too much, so enjoy that, too!

  • So busy at work

Drowning under stacks of paperwork… whee… thank GOD I have next week off… just to relax and finally, maybe a chance to sleep… to sleep, perchance to dream.  Actually I would rather not dream given what I’ve been thinking about lately… oh well.

My head feels stuffed with cotton, everything seen through a dim blur and I am just running on fumes here… need to complete so much stuff before I can happily go on vacay next week…

I haven’t been bento’ing and FORCED myself to this morning.  Fairly boring and straightforward, but I was in a total rush and well, it’s bento.

    Ok it’s lunch time…

    bye

  • Hi

This morning I left my bag (giant tote) on the seat next to me.  No one sat next to me.  (I took a later bus from the one that sock-girl takes.)

If that girl tries to sit next to me again, I am going to say calmly, “You can’t sit next to me.”  I really don’t care.  I am not going to keep moving because I get a window seat, which I like, and I sit in the part of the bus I like to (towards the front).  This is just ridiculous.  I don’t need to get that riled up that early in the morning.

My lunch from the cafeteria yesterday: marble re, pastrami, mustard, lettuce/tomato, and cole slaw/mac salad with a small root beer.  $5.15 for all of that.

See why I bento?  If I didn’t, I’d eat so much on a daily basis, I’d be about 20 lbs. heavier than I am now!  Or more, since I just lost that by bento’ing

My pathetic dinner.  Inside the bag is some onion rings, no burger for me.

And bento!  Somewhat simple but I am going to have a burger tonight if it kills me, so I need to ease up on my lunch.

Oosh, my tummy hungry already.  Another 1.5 hours till lunch!

    Happy Tuesday

  • Happy weekend?

So, just now, the girl with the ugly Christian Dior bag (of “taking her socks off on the bus” and “talking on her cell phone next to me” fame) sat next to me on the bus again.  While the bus was mostly empty.  Question: how do you prevent someone from sitting next to you?  Should I just look at her, huff a little, and ask her to move so I can move to another seat?  I don’t understand WTF she keeps sitting next to me.

Also, after I got off the bus, I was walking into my building and I almost stepped on a baby bird.  WELL, actually, I used to think/assume/not really think about it that they were baby pigeons but apparently they’re sparrows.  So not a baby bird, but a small one, and I stopped short and shit, I really almost stepped on it.

Friday’s lunch (yes, my bento was chucked aside in favor of Vietnamese and the company of a good friend)

Mmm… bun.  Even better on a day like today but hell no am I going to bother trekking to C-town.  ACTUALLY… there’s a place that delivers… hmm hmm hmmmmm….

My Saturday.  For pictures of the food, check out… FF.

    Sunday babysitting the nephews…

Always good eating with my family… (not shown: steak, hot dogs, chicken, etc. etc. etc.)

And more pictures but not for you to see.  Hehe.

Alright people, have a happy Monday~!

  • I dreamed

I was guzzling coffee from a convenience store machine.  I kept going back to the machine for refills.  This strikes me as hilarious because I routinely avoid caffeine, and in fact, only drink coffee on vacation, though in the dream I was at work.  Also… I’m that tired that even while sleeping, I’m dreaming that I’m trying to stay awake.  WTF?

Anyway… not much to say… last night was a lot of fun… people seemed to like my salsa… so that’s good… I only snagged one picture of a dish, but then gave up as I just decided to eat… food was good of course !!!  I hope everyone posts their recipes soon !

The one dish I managed to take a picture of, which I also surprisingly really liked.  YUM.  (Beet salad)

    Yet another new bento…

    Pink again…

And, bento!  Though I am really craving Vietnamese food and am debating heading over to Chinatown for some bun and summer rolls.  Hmm, hmm, hmm…

    Have a great weekend everyone!!!

  • I became my own hero(ine) today

This shit can only happen to me.  WTF?

So yesterday, took the express bus home.  Sat in the very first seat, right in front of the door, cuz the bus was pretty crowded.  A couple of stops later, someone sat down next to me, young girl.  Whatever, I didn’t bother really looking.

I had my sweater over me like a blanket because I was a little cold but didn’t want to wear it.  Okay.  No big deal.  About a stop before my stop, I started getting ready to get off.  I pulled my sweater off but the girl was sitting on it and didn’t bother moving.  I didn’t want to stretch my sweater, so I just looked at her until she finally shifted slightly so I could pull the sweater sleeve out, still stretching it.  ARGH.  Then, she reached down, “surreptitiously” pulled her socks off (in quotes because I saw her! and EW?!) and then put them in her purse.  Not only that, she chose to pull them off in my direction.  WTF???

When it was my stop, now, because of the way the seats are, most people on the express bus who sit on the outside part will GET UP completely to let the people on the inside part out.  This girl just shifted a little so I had to CLIMB over her.

    WTF???

Seriously, this would have been a non-issue for today’s post had this morning not happened.  I swear.  That was just a small inconvenience, not even that amusing.

So today, the bus was surprisingly empty.  I took my normal seat, which I haven’t been able to sit in for a week or two cuz it’s been super crowded.  Leaned back and covered myelf with my sweater again and settled into my morning nap.  Mmm.

A few stops later, my eyes closed, I hear someone say, “Hiii,” a young woman’s voice, so my eyes pop open, and I look up and at… the same girl.  She wasn’t saying hi to me, to someone else on the bus, cool.  She chose to sit next to me even though there were a million empty seats everywhere (I mean, entirely empty rows, ok?).  I ignore her and close my eyes again.

Then I hear her talking.  In Russian.  I open my eyes and turn my head.  She’s on the phone.  I thought I heard her say “Bye,” so I turned back, but then she proceeded to have an entire conversation!  I couldn’t even tell if her conversation was going to end soon or WHAT.  I kept thinking “Say something. Do it, or get up and move.  But I like this seat.  Say something.  OMFG this girl is pissing me off.  OMFG.”  Then…

you guys might like this.  I actually thought of my Xanga and how this would make a better story if something happened as opposed to “this person annoyed me the whole ride.”  I thought of how it’s sad that I just complain and complain here and don’t take steps to make my life better – well, my commuting life, the rest of my life is awesome – I thought of Xanga and how I can make this a happy ending.

I turned my head and stared at her.  She pointedly ignored me.  I leaned my head on the chair and just stared.  I know she knew I was staring at her, too.  After about 30 seconds, I said plainly, “Do you MIND?” and she said “Sure, just one second,” (not in a nice way, actually, even though it sounds like it) and got off in 5 seconds flat.  I guess her conversation was already ending or I don’t know.  I DON’T KNOW, it wasn’t in English.  Maybe it was a fake conversation.  I don’t know, I really don’t.

Seriously, WTF though?  There were empty seats all around but she chose to sit next to me, clearly sleeping or trying to, and make a phone call.  I was so farking irritated I wanted to punch her.

And then later when I got a good look at her, I made a lot of rude judgements about her in my head.  Haha.

Anyways, I’m super busy again at work

and I LOST MY FUCKING GROCERY LIST.  You have no idea how much that annoys me, I make lists because I can’t remember things, so losing it is like… extra fucking sucky.  Sigh.

OMFG that looks so good.  I’m hungry now.  Sigh.

    Happy Tuesday!

  • I just got hit by a car

BEFORE ANYONE FREAKS OUT, I AM FINE.

I was crossing the street but it was pretty crowded/busy so I was on the edge of the crowd crossing… and I was trying to hurry because it was like 9:25 or something stupid, so as I’m skirting around someone, the stupid cab waiting at the RED LIGHT must’ve eased his foot off the brake while not looking, and for some idiotic reason took it off altogether, because he nudged me, and since I was rushing and wearing heels for the first time in who-knows-how-long (well, heeled sandals, which is a bit worse in some ways, I think), I lost my balance and toppled over and someone caught me.  Phew.  I was pissed!!!  I thanked the person and wanted to run over to the guy’s window and slap him but I figured it’s too early on a Monday morning.  Plus no harm no foul right?  I didn’t fall, I’m fine, so.

The bus ride this morning was interminable.  I wished desperately for guy angry about noise to be there.  There were two women chattering loudly in Russian the whole ride, and behind them, a woman talking soooo loudly on her phone, I wanted to reach across and bitch slap her.  I am just too passive sometimes.  Sigh.

Speaking of being ignored, yesterday was interesting.  This is at least the 2nd time in my life I’ve been ignored while volunteering directions.  See why I hate people and don’t try to help them?

I boarded the 7 train at Main Street to go to Shea Stadium, one stop away.  There were a couple of other people in my car (which, coincidentally, lets you off right in front of the stadium) that were clearly going to the game, since they were wearing jerseys, hats, etc.  WHITE PEOPLE.  (The 7 train generally has minority passengers except on game days/nights.)  So the train was waiting in the station for a few minutes, and then boards this middle aged white man with his teenaged son.  He looks around, then makes a beeline for the old Asian man sitting next to where I’m standing (and I have my Mets hat on, thanks), and asks him first, “Do you speak English?”

Now, if you know anything about immigrant/older Asian people, they don’t trust people, and they certainly want to know wtf you want to know if they speak English or not first.  To top it off, that’s pretty fucking rude to assume he doesn’t!  (BTW, while in New Orleans, my (Asian) friend and I were approached by white tourists who asked us if we spoke English.  While we were examining a trolley map and discussing it loudly.  In English.)  So the old man says slowly, “A little…” and the stupid tourist guy says, “Does this train go to Shea?”

Ok… the old Asian guy doesn’t hear or doesn’t understand “Shea” so he says “Where?” and the guy repeats himself a little impatiently.  So I jump in to save the old guy and am like, “Yeah, it goes to Shea Stadium,” and the white tourist guy ignores me!  He’s literally standing only a foot away from me.  I give him the benefit of the doubt as he asks the guy again and is gesturing, I guess to explain what a stadium and baseball is?!, and I cut in again, “Yeah, it goes to Shea,” and he ignores me AGAIN!  So finally, someone else on the train jumps into the conversation and says “She’s not lying to you, dude, the next stop is Shea Stadium,” and the tourist guy looks a bit miffed and actually has the nerve to mumble “Oh well I wasn’t asking her,” and look away.  WHAT THE FUCK?  Why didn’t you ask any of the white people who clearly spoke English (they were talking to each other… about the game they were going to)???  Why didn’t you let me tell you in my perfect English that yea, it goes there?!

    What a DICK.

(The last time I was ignored while trying to give directions was the opposite, actually, when a Chinese woman approached my Chinese-non-speaking friend for directions and I tried to give them to her, but she rallied on and ignored me.  Because I don’t look Chinese enough for her apparently.  Well, my Chinese is much better than the other girl, who looks much more Chinese, so the girl just waved her on with shrugs and “I don’t speak Chinese! Let her tell you!” and the woman just huffed and turned away.)

THIS IS WHY I AM NOT NICE TO PEOPLE!

Great game btw.  HEHEHE.  Some awesome plays by both teams but in the end only one could reign supreme and that’s MY team!  MY house, what!  *does a little dance*

‘course, the stupid game started at 8, so I got home at like midnight and then couldn’t sleep until 1 cuz I was still amped up.  AH well.

    Obligatory pictures of the weekend!

    Oh my delicious pork ribs.

    After dinner drinks.

    Brunch on Saturday.

    Ping pong after brunch.

    Snack after ping pong.

And my Sunday night.  (The day was spent cleaning, grocery shopping, running errands, as most Sundays are.)  (I realize the ticket says 1 pm but they changed game time to 8.)

And yet another shot of my baby at bat.  He did well last night.  The whole team did.  But him… oh damn, I was seriously getting goosebumps watching him.  Sigh.  If only he liked Asian girls.  Wait a second, who DOESN’T like Asian girls?!  Hahahaha

Finally, my bento.  Details up on ALL MY BENTO ARE BELONG TO ME in a bit.

***Gosh it’s taken me all day to be able to post this.  So busy at work lately!  Eeesh.
