Overheard in the elevator this morning, between two attorneys:
“How was your weekend?”
“Mine was great! How about yours?”
“… I worked… both days…”
No thanks! There you go, in a nutshell, why I didn’t go to law school.
So please stop fucking asking, kthx.
Even more horrifying is when people ask what I do and I speak so dismissively of my own passion, writing. I don’t know why I do that. To be perfectly honest, I’m not that passionate about food writing because I don’t think I’m that good at it. I mean, I do it, and people read it, but my descriptions lack the poetic flow of some other food writers who are, well, amazing at their trade. Anyway, that’s not the point of this paragraph. I’m just saying, I don’t understand why I am just like, “Oh, I write about food…,” and y’know, it kind of annoys me when people are like, “Oh…” with this air of “So what?” Well, you frikkin’ asked… It’s not like I’m sitting there bragging about it. I don’t know. I think what’s bothering me is that on Saturday, I was talking to someone about food and handed them my business card- which lists my websites on there- they looked it over, and then turned to me and asked, “But what do you do for a living?” I looked him in the eye and said, “I’m a food writer” because… I don’t know you (I had literally just met him while standing on line for a milkshake). That’s pretty damn nosy even if I hadn’t just given you my business card… and yeah, I’m a food writer. Period.
This other world I live in… it doesn’t exist for me sometimes…
Somewhat related, I discovered something disturbing about myself this weekend. It’s fixable, and I guess I’ll fix it, but I’m not that happy about it. Sigh. When am I ever that happy though?
A shut out last night. That makes their 9th straight win. *squee* I love my team. And yes, that’s DW at bat =P
Bento!
Cheers!
Man, seriously, door closes, window opens, life is handing me some really surprising choices and options lately. I am thrilled with most of them
and happy with the rate things are going…
How was my 4th of July weekend…? BBQ, fireworks by the bridge, BBQ again at my sister’s, more food, and then playing tour guide around the city on Sunday… I didn’t realize I knew so much about the Financial District. Random stuff you pick up along the way, really… But I guess it is one of the most rife-with-history areas in NYC, considering it’s probably one of, if not the, oldest section… (I mean, it dates back to Dutch times!)
Anyways, lots going on, so I’ll make this quick.
Picture taken from my bus… see under the bridge? It’s a waterfall!
Still on the bus… free standing waterfall, looks stupid and look how much water is going into the parking lot.
Late night snack on the 4th… this, from a Greek diner, was only OKAY… and then I got really sick later that night. Maybe that was from too much vodka though?
Sunday’s lunch, plate #1… they’re getting funky with the sushi! Pretty darn tasty though. You see the one up top, left of the inari? It had caviar on top… and was huge, but you couldn’t really bite it to eat it, it would just fall apart.. so I put the whole damn thing in my mouth. Hahaha. It was… interesting… trying to chew it, with no room for my tongue to move… lol.
Plate #2… yum yum… some of this stuff… actually more than half the stuff here fell very flat unfortunately…
And… bento!!! YUMMY!!!
Happy Tuesday, y’all.
… not the reality.

Don’t these people have better fucking things to worry about???
For those of you who watch Top Chef, I met CJ yesterday.
For everyone else- me neither! I have no idea who he is, and he seemed a bit miffed that we weren’t all OMFG. I only knew who he was cuz he was wearing a chef jacket that said “Top Chef” on it, and it said “CJ” whatever on it. Ah well. Good times.
I love press events ![]()
Anyway, I’ll be posting about it later, so you’ll have to find out there.
Teaser shot! The goodie “bag” from the event. Haha.
Ciao ciao,
me
Well I haven’t got much to talk about. I am, once again, exhausted, mostly from one night poorly planned so I didn’t sleep enough. Ah well.
Lots of big things going on in life, and, per usual, will be posting lots of pictures to distract both you and myself! Here we go:
Friday, June 20, lunch:
Exactly the reason I avoided street meat for so long. Yes, I had a tummy ache later.
Still Friday… picked up a sweet treat for BF and me.
My Red Velvet on the left, his Coffee (or was it cappucino? or mocha?) on the left. Ironically, we both liked the other’s cupcake more.
June 21: Saturday brunch/breakfast. Courtesy of myself… made for the BF, I rarely eat French toast. And yes that’s a little sprig of basil from my own plant ![]()
June 22, Sunday, brunch after volunteering at the soup ktchen. Look at all the dipping sauces/spreads!
Monday, June 23 lunch: yes, even at home, I like to plate my food. And I actually used my plate from Color Me Mine to eat – I usually use it as the um-what-do-you-call-it thing you leave on your stove to rest drippy spoons. A spoon rest, I guess.
Basically what I took care of on Monday: cleaning, arranging, organizing my kitchen. It’s tiny! Not as small as the last one, but squishier nonetheless. See the little one who HAD to jump into the picture?! Brat. (So yes, I have an eat-in-kitchen but I haven’t really eaten in there aside from standing at the sink perhaps. And I really do need a 2nd coat of paint but I’m all moved in and stuff so I kind of feel whatever about doing that.)
Tuesday, June 24 lunch: yes, I ate the whole tray for lunch. Inhaled it, really, I was so starving by the time I got back and was able to sit down to freaking eat.
Tuesday June 24th dinner… kind of bento style. A little bit of everything. (Roast duck, crispy skin pork, gim bap, marinated fishies, marinated cuttlefish, spicy garlic beans, pickled cucumbers, vegetarian duck, choi sum, some beef pancake thing my brother said was good, and seafood pancake, with white rice in the middle.)
My sad and lonely lunch on June 26th.. yes I skipped a day. I don’t know what I had for lunch on Wednesday. I know I went grocery shopping and picked up loads of stuff, then went to my sister’s house to celebrate my brother-in-law’s ancient birthday, and had dinner with his parents at their house, so I didn’t take pictures of that (but DAMN was it GOOD!)… but not sure what was lunch. And you wonder why I take pictures of all that I eat? Anyway, the above is basically much of what I had on Tuesday again. And some char sui.
For those who know me, this is a true accomplishment. I wrapped this. I was so proud, I had to take pictures.
I wrapped it, then put the ribbon on and attached a charm. I thought it was a cell phone charm when I ordered it, but it’s rather, well, large. HOW PRETTY DOES THAT LOOK? Me, the totally-not-craft-inclined!!! Hehehe.
Of course, when it was time for the bday celebration, I left it at home and was glad I’d taken pictures, since I wound up showing the pictures to the bday girl instead. And to everyone else. (What’s inside isn’t even that exciting, or I doubt it will be for her. Oh well.)
Friday afternoon @ the game. Didn’t take pictures of the soggy nachos or the hot dog, which was good as usual, even though I literally inhaled it… but DAMN WAS THAT A GOOD GAME. If you’re a baseball fan, or somewhat observant of all the baseball pictures I take, you’ll notice that I’m not sitting in my normal seat… nor am I in the same stadium… and plus I go to games on Sundays, not Fridays! What gives! Well it’s the YANKEES/METS BABY!!! and I got excellent seats (look how close we are! Actually we even moved down an hour later so we were on the plushy seats!) for an excellent price so off we went on Friday. Oh dan, what a GREAT game! including a GRAND SLAM BY DELGADO, afterwhich we noticed a SQUIRREL running around the field, and then a MAN RAN DOWN ONTO THE FIELD and was tackled by 5 security guys! When all is said and done, the final score speaks for itself: 15-6, MY METS BABY!!! (Admittedly, the night game of the two-stadium double-header was 9-0, Yankees.)
After the game, we headed back into the city to pick up some stuff: my first paycheck as a freelance food writer (squee!!!), some stuff from his office, and we were planning on hitting a bar to watch the 2nd game but honestly it was sooo gross out, we were all so sticky from sitting at the first game, well, we headed home. Not before stopping by this place for dinner, however, and we were both pleasantly surprised with the food. (Review to come, of course.)
Most of the photos of this day can’t be shown here, but it was the bday party! This was our last stop for the night (3rd Floor Cafe, ahhh brings back memories!). We started off at the batting cages – I’m STILL sore!, then bowled two games where I proved that 5 years away from the lanes will really show- boo…, then dinner at Korean BBQ place in K-town and then off to 3rd Floor Cafe. Oh, it was a ton of fun, made even more so because we started drinking at bowling and didn’t stop until we went home. Wow. Haven’t drank that much in a while. I also effectively proved, once again, that I AM AWESOME… but did you ever doubt? ![]()
It was a baseball-heavy weekend as I headed back to Shea Stadium for the last [regular season] Subway Series game ever to be played at Shea (and yes, Friday was the same for Yankee Stadium). The only way another Subway Series game would be played is if they both go to the World Series but that’s looking highly unlikely, so. Anyway, we rocked the house again – way to go OLLIE! – and won 3-1. Awesome game. I was happy… very happy.
Afterwards, I headed to my sister’s house for a BBQ where I ate so much that I seriously was ready to blow chunks right after I finished eating. Good stuff. Should have taken home some stuff for lunch today, but whatever!
And today’s bento. There was supposed to be meat in there but I opened up my turkey slices and they’d gone slimy and bad. So… no meat. Haha.
Anyway, it’s almost time for lunch and I’m starving. Will probably have to get something to eat in addition to this, but ah well.
Happy Monday!!!
When your forms of relaxation are aggravating you, perhaps it’s time to find a new method of relaxation…?
In any case.
Got a package yesterday… squee!!!
Can’t tell you what’s in it…
Let’s just say, I spent a lot… and hopefully these things work!
Today’s bento
Have a fantastic weekend everyone! I will probably not be around next week too much, so enjoy that, too!

Drowning under stacks of paperwork… whee… thank GOD I have next week off… just to relax and finally, maybe a chance to sleep… to sleep, perchance to dream. Actually I would rather not dream given what I’ve been thinking about lately… oh well.
My head feels stuffed with cotton, everything seen through a dim blur and I am just running on fumes here… need to complete so much stuff before I can happily go on vacay next week…
I haven’t been bento’ing and FORCED myself to this morning. Fairly boring and straightforward, but I was in a total rush and well, it’s bento.
Ok it’s lunch time…
bye
